Scott NineAssistant Superintendent Office of Education Innovation and Improvement at Oregon Department of Education
In July 2019, Scott Nine was hired by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) as the Assistant Superintendent for the agency’s new Office of Education Innovation and Improvement. The new office, in collaboration with many at ODE, will steward the Student Investment Account (SIA) under the Student Success Act. The SIA provides grants for school districts based on enrollment.
Scott has spent almost two decades organizing, writing, speaking, and learning about what it takes to foster equity for students and remodel public education systems. He has practiced and embodied the values and skills that this role will require. First among them is his understanding of the kinds of teams, culture, strategies, and community that is needed to attend to the promises and dreams of young people, families, educators, and legislators.
He joins ODE from the National Public Education Support Fund where he had a significant leadership role advancing the Partnership for the Future of Learning. Scott also taught middle-school English, has a Master’s degree in Social Work from Arizona State University, and has led four start-up projects of very different scales. While his work has been mostly national in focus over the last decade, he has lived in Oregon for the last 15 years. Scott has also served as the Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Education in America (IDEA) where he spent five years traveling, listening, organizing, and learning about the state of education across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. His work focuses on the intersections of place and community-based education, movement building, systems entrepreneurship, action research, and public narrative. Scott was featured in the American Education Research Association’s “Lead the Change” series in 2014. He earned his MSW from Arizona State University in 2002.
